Donald Trump took to Truth Social to lash out at actor George Clooney after the actor's appearance on CBS' 60 Minutes on March 23.
During the interview, Clooney discussed his Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck, which is based on his 2005 film about CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow's battle against Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist crusade. Clooney, who now stars in the play, spoke about the importance of press freedom and the growing tension between journalists and political figures.
Clooney expressed concern about the government's attempts to undermine the press, saying, “Governments don’t like the freedom of the press. They never have,” emphasizing that this issue transcends political lines. He also referred to recent defamation lawsuits involving ABC News and CBS News, noting how these legal actions are part of a larger effort to “make journalists smaller.”
In response to Clooney’s comments, Trump attacked both 60 Minutes and Clooney, calling the actor a “second rate movie star and failed political pundit.” Trump also criticized Clooney’s political endorsements, including his support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and accused the actor of dishonestly influencing the 2020 election.
This is not the first time Trump has targeted Clooney on social media. Prior to the 2020 election, Trump referred to Clooney as a “fake movie actor” after Clooney wrote an op-ed urging Biden to drop out of the race. Clooney responded humorously in an interview, saying he would return to television if Trump did as well.
Good Night, and Good Luck is currently in previews on Broadway, with its opening scheduled for April 3.
