Chelsea must decide whether to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, but backing out of their agreement with Manchester United could cost them £5 million.
Sancho, 24, joined Chelsea on loan after being frozen out by former United manager Erik ten Hag. The deal included an option for Chelsea to sign the winger for £25 million. However, speculation has grown that the club may abandon the move following a downturn in the player's form.
Sancho registered three assists in his first three Chelsea appearances but has failed to contribute a goal or assist in over two months. Chelsea negotiated a clause allowing them to walk away from the deal, but they would still be required to pay United a £5 million fee, according to sports journalist David Ornstein.
While a change of management at Old Trafford has taken place since Sancho's departure, it remains unclear whether new boss Ruben Amorim would reintegrate him into the squad. Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes the winger has not done enough to justify a permanent move.
"He’s a talented player, everybody knows this, but we don’t know why he can’t perform," Gallas told Stadium Astro.
"At Dortmund, he was magnificent. At Manchester United, it didn’t work. He came to Chelsea, and at first, we saw glimpses of the old Sancho, but then he disappeared. If you play in the Premier League, you have to perform at the highest level every game."
Sancho's future remains uncertain, with Chelsea now weighing their options ahead of the summer transfer window.
