LAHORE:

Civil society activists, students, and animal rights organisations staged a protest in Lahore against the widespread culling of stray dogs across Punjab, demanding humane population control measures.

Organised by the Pakistan Animal Rights Advocacy Group (PARAG), the demonstration saw participation from lawyers, students, and human rights activists, all calling for the protection of stray animals and the enforcement of ethical alternatives.

The protest began at Lahore High Court Chowk, where demonstrators peacefully marched towards Town Hall, chanting slogans against the killing of stray dogs.

Upon reaching Town Hall, they sought a meeting with municipal authorities. While the Chief Municipal Officer was unavailable, the protesters met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Metropolitan Corporation.

Initially dismissive, the official reconsidered his stance after the activists presented legal documents and court rulings advocating humane methods.

The protesters pledged to provide further court orders, prompting the CEO to agree to review the matter.

Many among the demonstrators shared personal experiences, recounting the loss of pets or the distressing sight of mass culling.

Their emotional appeals led to the deployment of additional police personnel at Town Hall, though the protesters reiterated their commitment to a peaceful demonstration focused on constructive dialogue.
