The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has warned social media users to adhere to national values and ethical standards online, cautioning that violations will result in legal consequences.
The National Media Office (NMO), in an official statement on Sunday, underscored the duty of all social media users to uphold the UAE’s core values, including respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
“Every action you take, positive or negative, reflects your Emirati identity,” said President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as quoted in the statement. He urged the public to act as ambassadors of the country by reflecting national identity through their digital behaviour.
The NMO warned against sharing any content that insults or demeans national symbols, public figures, or allied nations. Violations, it said, will lead to legal action in collaboration with relevant authorities, under laws designed to foster a secure and respectful online environment.
In addition, users were cautioned against spreading misleading information, engaging in hate speech, or posting defamatory content — directly or indirectly. The office stressed that such acts breach existing legislation and will be punished accordingly.
The statement reiterated that everyone bears the responsibility of safeguarding the country’s digital image and reputation.
Citizens were also encouraged to report offensive or non-compliant content through official government channels to help maintain what the office described as “a credible and responsible digital media environment.”
The NMO urged users to follow the example set by the UAE’s leadership, known for its humility and ethical standards. It specifically cited Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s guidelines for social media conduct, which call on users to reflect the wisdom of the nation’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
The principles outlined include showcasing the UAE’s knowledge, culture, and civilisation, refraining from profanity or insults, promoting positive discourse, and engaging respectfully with global cultures and ideas.
The office concluded by reaffirming its commitment to coordinating with law enforcement and media regulators to track violations and enforce legal penalties where necessary.
