Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif marked the completion of one year of his government with a special meeting of the federal cabinet.
Addressing the cabinet, PM highlighted the government’s achievements and the challenges faced in securing economic stability, particularly in light of obstacles in the IMF programme.
Shehbaz Sharif explained that both he and Army Chief General Asim Munir visited friendly countries to address issues impeding the IMF programme. He noted that these efforts were crucial in preventing Pakistan from defaulting and helping the nation’s economic indicators improve.
“Our government has completed one year, and despite facing opposition, we have not been derailed by any scandals. Our progress will continue, and the journey towards national development will remain steadfast until the end of extremist factions,” Sharif stated.
The Prime Minister also underscored that the government’s Ramadan package had been significantly increased, from Rs 7 billion last year to Rs 20 billion this year. The package will reach 4 million families across the country, including in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
Discussing Pakistan’s economic situation, Shehbaz Sharif pointed out that a year ago, the country was teetering on the brink of default. “When we were negotiating with the IMF, certain individuals were writing letters asking the IMF to reject Pakistan’s programme. This was an act of national treachery,” he added.
Shehbaz Sharif further highlighted the positive assessments of Pakistan’s macroeconomic indicators by the World Bank and other international financial institutions. “Thanks to our allies and institutions, we have navigated through tough times, and today, we are on the path to recovery,” he said.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the collaborative efforts that led to securing a deal with the IMF, including efforts to fill a $5 billion gap by seeking assistance from friendly countries. He credited his efforts and those of Army Chief General Asim Munir for successfully securing this funding, which helped stabilise Pakistan’s finances.
Shehbaz Sharif concluded by mentioning a recent boost in Pakistan’s oil facilitation agreement by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which provided much-needed financial relief.
“The key to our success has been teamwork. We must continue working together and not undermine each other to change Pakistan’s future,” PM emphasised.
