SANGHAR:

Laws to prevent violence against women exist in the books but effective implementation remains a challenge, said Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Vice Chairperson Qazi Khizr Habib.

He acknowledged that Sindh has institutions to combat gender-based violence, but a lack of awareness about these organisations and their efforts has hindered progress in addressing the issue.

Addressing a media at Sanghar Press Club, Qazi Khizr Habib said there is a need for proactive efforts within the framework of human rights to prohibit GBV. He stressed the importance of prioritising raising awareness.

Speaking at the meeting, HRCP Council members Saadia Baloch, Saleem Jarwar and Saeed Ahmed Baloch urged collective action to eliminate discriminatory attitudes towards women and girls in homes. They said that women need to be involved in decision-making and household problems at home.

HRCP Hyderabad Regional Coordinator Ghufrana Arayen said that the incidence of domestic violence against women is increasing and one of the reasons is the lack of access to information about redressal institutions and laws among women.
