New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has expressed optimism that his team's recent successes in Pakistan will bolster their confidence ahead of their upcoming ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh on Monday.
The Black Caps have demonstrated formidable form, securing a tri-nations series victory against Pakistan and South Africa, followed by a commanding 60-run win over defending champions Pakistan in Karachi.
Reflecting on their recent performances, Santner remarked, "It’s a nice position to have. I think obviously the lead-in we had with that tri-nations series and now the guys will take a lot of confidence in that going into Bangladesh game."
Despite their impressive track record, Santner emphasized the need for a strategic approach against Bangladesh, acknowledging the team's potential to challenge top-tier sides.
He noted, "They have guys who can attack with the bat as well. I mean, Hridoy played a great innings last game, and Jaker Ali has come on and done a lot of good stuff already. So yeah, it's a team we're not taking lightly for sure."
Santner also highlighted Bangladesh's balanced squad, despite the absence of seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. He stated, "Obviously, we've seen how good Shakib has been for a long time. He's proven that he can perform in all conditions. But still they've got obviously Rishad coming in, who's a very good leg-spinner. Mehidy has done it. (Mohammad) Mahmudullah, if he plays, can offer some good overs as well, so I think their balance is good at the moment."
Looking ahead to the match in Rawalpindi, Santner emphasized the importance of building partnerships, especially considering the venue's reputation for high-scoring games.
He remarked, "If it is pretty flat I think it is probably similar stuff to what we've been operating in Karachi. It's hitting that hard length for a long period of time, and then we know they have some destructive players in their line-up as well."
