Rs20 per kg subsidy on sugar in Ramazan

1kg and 2kg sugar bags will be sold with a limit of 5kg per citizen

ISLAMABAD:

All stakeholders have agreed to provide sugar to consumers at a reduced rate in Ramazan, which is expected to commence from March 1. The government will provide a subsidy of Rs20 on each kilogramme of sugar and the commodity will be sold at Rs130 per kg during the holy month.

Sources said an agreement to reduce sugar prices was reached during a meeting attended by representatives from all four provinces and sugar mill owners.

They said the Ministry of Industries and Production will send the summary for subsidized sugar to the Food Security Division for final approval, and sugar will be sold at Rs130 per kilogramme. The cane commissioner will be responsible for monitoring sugar prices.

The sources revealed that the Ministry of Industries and Production has issued the meeting communiqué to the chief secretaries of all four provinces and sent an official notification to the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association regarding the Rs130 per kg price.

During Ramazan, subsidized sugar will be available in low-cost model bazaars and will be supplied at counters in mega, large, and small stores. One- and two-kilogramme sugar bags will be sold with a limit of five kilogrammes per citizen based on their computerized national identity cards (CNICs).

The responsibility of focal persons for sugar distribution in all four provinces has been assigned to the Cane Commissioner. The sale of subsidized sugar will begin three days before Ramazan and will continue until the 27th of Ramazan.
