In response to rising encroachments, deteriorating infrastructure, and severe traffic congestion, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi announced the establishment of a "Complaint Cell" at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The cell will include representatives from the commissioner's office, deputy commissioners' offices, and KCCI.
Speaking at a meeting during his visit to KCCI on Thursday, Naqvi stated, "This complaint cell aims to address the hardships faced by shopkeepers due to encroachments in front of their shops." He warned that strict action would be taken against encroachments, including penalties and sealing business premises. Shopkeepers allowing encroachers to operate or providing them electricity will also face consequences.
Naqvi noted that ongoing development projects, particularly the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) initiative, are contributing to traffic congestion, which will persist until their completion. "Until then, we must manage the situation and ensure better traffic regulation," he said. The possibility of allowing heavy vehicles to operate during off-peak hours is also under consideration to support businesses and industries.
He highlighted that several buildings misuse designated parking areas for commercial purposes and announced the immediate revival of the "Commissioner-KCCI Liaison Committee," seeking KCCI's nominations for collaborative problem-solving.
KCCI President Jawed Bilwani called for practical solutions to enhance road safety, noting that heavy vehicles of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) contribute to daytime congestion and accidents. He proposed restricting garbage collection to night-time and early morning hours to improve traffic flow and reduce mishaps.
