Victor Wembanyama will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the San Antonio Spurs announced.
The condition was discovered following his return to San Antonio after the All-Star break in San Francisco.
In his second NBA season, Wembanyama, 21, has posted impressive stats, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks in 33.2 minutes per game over 46 contests. He had been a strong candidate for an All-NBA selection and was considered the favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year.
Unfortunately, the injury means Wembanyama will not meet the minimum requirement of 65 games needed to qualify for those honors.
As a result, another player will likely fill his spot. The 7'4" French player, often referred to as "Wemby" or "The Alien," was selected first overall by the Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft, becoming one of the most highly anticipated prospects in recent years.
