In an interview with Faridoon Shahryar on Saturday, Mawra Hocane shared that she has not yet signed on the sequel, though she's grateful for the success of Sanam Teri Kasam's re-release.
"Whether I take on Sanam Teri Kasam 2 or someone else does, all I know is that my producer really deserves this success and the numbers that are pouring in. More than any of us, Deepak [Mukut] deserves this. And I hope to God that when he makes a second part, it's even more successful than what we are receiving now, with or without me," she said.
Mawra added that her best wishes will always be with the crew. If it's possible to do so, she would love to come back. But if not, then she bears no hard feelings. "Given all the love that Sanam Teri Kasam is getting after nine years, there is no space to complain. A lot of people from India messaged me to tell me how miraculous this accomplishment is, that this does not usually happen," she said.
The Jafaa star, who only recently married actor Ameer Gilani, stated that she could hardly make sense of the news with the hubbub of her wedding festivities happening alongside. "I was receiving texts telling me that the movie was making history, and I was like, 'What's going on?!' I didn't get it. So, I'm just happy with everything I've achieved so far. This is all the work of luck. If my involvement is written in my fate, then well and good. If not, then I'm still going to be really happy for my team," she vowed.
Since its re-release earlier in February, Sanam Teri Kasam has been performing well in Indian theatres and has earned over INR32 crore. Many Bollywood greats lauded the film's success, including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Vidya Balan. Vidya specifically praised Mawra's performance on Instagram Stories Wednesday, remarking, "Mawra, aap kamaal ho (Mawra, you are amazing)."
"You know, my husband's name is 'Ameer Kamaal Gilani', so my brother showed me Vidya ma'am's post and asked me how she knew that," Mawra enthused.
"We were all joking about how her compliment adds to my surname. And also, it was really sweet of her to appreciate my work," Mawra said, admiring the Bhool Bhulaiyaa actor's work in turn.
A late bloomer
Despite its staggering success as of late, the film bombed in the box office after its original release back in 2016. The disappointing outcome dimmed the spirits of the crew, causing them to isolate themselves from each other.
However, during his recent interview with Faridoon, Harshvardhan Rane expressed his regrets at cutting contact with Mawra, which the interviewer relayed to the actor.
"There's no need to apologise," Mawra said, adding that the entire unit succumbed to the fall, be it the directors or the actors or the costume team. "Everyone worked so hard. So, I think it wasn't just him; everyone went into a cocoon. Personally, even for me it was very heartbreaking. It was a soul-shattering experience."
Mawra elaborated on her personal struggles, sharing that even down to the travelling experience, she took on an endeavour that was unlike anything she had done before. Only twenty-two years old then, the Sabaat actor had been alone for the first time in her life and gave her all to the project.
"The exhaustion of hard work diminishes once you are rewarded with success. But since we didn't get that, it was a heartbreaking ordeal for everyone involved," she said. "It took me a year to resurrect."
She added that it was difficult for everyone to console each other, so no one is to blame for how things turned out. "I felt as if the actor in me had died. But I'm grateful to my producers for convincing me otherwise, and I was able to deliver in shows like Sammi and Aangan," she said.
