The Israeli cabinet has officially approved Eyal Zamir as the next Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff.

The decision, made during a meeting on Sunday, paves the way for Zamir to step into the role on March 5, succeeding Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, who resigned following the military's failure to prevent the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Zamir, 59, is a veteran military officer, and this appointment comes after a thorough approval process, including endorsement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz.

Katz has lauded Zamir’s vast experience, expressing full confidence in his ability to lead the IDF to victory across multiple fronts.

"Zamir’s leadership is exactly what we need to ensure the strength and success of the IDF," Katz said during the cabinet meeting. "His leadership will not only safeguard Israel but also bring long-term victory over our enemies."

Zamir's new role follows a series of setbacks for the IDF after events of October 7, which left many questioning the military's readiness.

As part of his duties, Zamir will have to appoint new commanders, including in key positions left vacant after the resignations of several senior officers, including Halevi.

Zamir, who began his military career in 1984, has held multiple significant positions, including commander of the Southern Command and deputy chief of staff.

His background in the Armored Corps and his experience in handling high-stakes military operations have made him a well-respected figure in Israel’s military leadership.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has praised Zamir’s "offensive approach" and expressed his belief that Zamir will lead Israel into a new era of military strength.

"We expect great achievements under his leadership," Netanyahu added.
