PM calls for stronger UN partnership on climate action

Shehbaz Sharif also stressed the importance of bridging the financing gap to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Friday, stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration with the United Nations in addressing the critical issues of sustainable development and climate change.

During a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya, the PM reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to combating climate change, highlighting the need for continued partnership with the international community and the UN.

The prime minister commended the valuable work being carried out by the UN's team in Pakistan, particularly their efforts during the country’s climate-related challenges.

He also extended his warm regards to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, recalling his leadership and the vital support he garnered for Pakistan during the devastating floods of 2022.

A key point of discussion was the need for climate financing, which PM Shehbaz emphasised as a crucial component in addressing the impacts of climate change.

He urged developed nations to honour their financial commitments to the cause, underscoring the significance of fulfilling these obligations to support climate mitigation and adaptation efforts globally.

Pakistan’s continued collaboration with the UN was also emphasised, particularly in implementing various climate change projects.

Additionally, the prime minister stressed the importance of bridging the financing gap to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He further advocated for the increased representation of developing countries in international financial institutions, calling for reforms in the global financial architecture to better reflect the needs of emerging economies.

The meeting was attended by several senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, and the PM’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khursheed Alam.
