Sher Afzal Marwat, the former member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), caused a stir in the National Assembly with his light-hearted yet pointed remark, “Mujhe kyun nikala?” (Why was I removed?), after his expulsion from the party.
His question, which echoed his frustration over his removal, prompted laughter from government lawmakers and a mix of reactions across the assembly.
Marwat, known for his frequent appearances through the opposition gate, walked in through the entrance for treasury members, which led to desk-thumping from government members.
This prompted a remark from the Speaker of the National Assembly, who jokingly warned: “Don’t get him in trouble.”
During the session’s Q&A, the Speaker asked Marwat to comment on the merger of mobile companies.
Instead of addressing the issue, Marwat turned the conversation back to his expulsion, asking, "Why was I removed?" His question was met with laughter from the government side, while PTI lawmakers chose to remain silent.
Marwat’s words were met with chants from government members, including slogans like, “Why was Marwat removed?” and “Oppressors, answer us! Give Marwat justice!”
As he spotted PTI parliamentary leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Marwat appealed to the government members for support.
During the session, PML-N's Hanif Abbasi reassured Marwat with a light-hearted gesture, saying, “We stand with you, and we will help send you back to PTI.”
Marwat’s expulsion from PTI came after repeated violations of party discipline. However, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has urged Imran Khan to reconsider Marwat’s expulsion and reinstate him into the party fold.
Sher Afzal Marwat had, a day earlier, publicly addressed his expulsion from the PTI, which was executed under the orders of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan.
In a long social media post, Marwat expressed deep disappointment over his expulsion, emphasising his unwavering loyalty to PTI and Imran Khan’s leadership.
He mentioned that the decision appeared to be influenced by individuals who never accepted him within the party but reassured his supporters that he had never been involved in personal disputes or internal factionalism.
Instead, he always stood by the vision of Imran Khan, prioritising the party's unity over personal conflicts.
Marwat acknowledged the difficulties faced by Imran Khan, including limited access to information and the presence of certain individuals whose actions were detrimental to the party's interests.
In a firm stance, Marwat stated that while he would accept PTI’s decision with dignity if the party did not reconsider, he would never beg for mercy. He strongly urged PTI leaders and workers to speak up against injustice and to remain united, particularly when facing difficult times.
PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan directed party leaders to expel Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat from party.
The decision follows internal dissatisfaction with Marwat’s actions during the Swabi gathering, prompting multiple complaints to Imran Khan from party members.
Last month, PTI had issued a show cause notice to Sher Afzal Marwat for violating party discipline.
In a notice, the PTI leadership reprimanded party leader Sher Afzal Marwat, known for his fiery oratory, for making statements contrary to the party’s official position.
