Regional Director of the Environment Protection Agency Imran Ali Abbasi said that all distilleries and sugar mills must treat their wastewater completely under the Sindh Environmental Quality Standards using effluent treatment plants before they can operate. All sugar mills have been advised to organise workshops and programmes for international research studies on waste management in each distillery, enabling sugarcane waste to be used as fertiliser for crops.
He was addressing a workshop on utilising sugar industry waste products in modern agriculture. Abbasi mentioned that the distilleries have signed an agreement with the USPCAS Department of Mehran University to make mill waste usable by improving chemical oxygen and other parametres.
