RAWALPINDI:

Punjab Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr Usman Anwar has sought a detailed report on cases of serious nature registered during January in the Rawalpindi division to review their progress.

District police chiefs have been instructed to send detailed reports to the Punjab Police Headquarters at the earliest.

Sources revealed that following instructions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the provincial government has initiated monthly monitoring of serious cases and their investigations across the province.

The Punjab IG directed the police heads of Rawalpindi districts to report on serious crimes such as murder, murder during robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping, and abduction for ransom, as well as how many such cases were registered in January.

Sources further said they are required to report how many cases were traced and referred to courts, how many interim challans were submitted, how many criminals were arrested, and how many remain at large. The branches concerned in Rawalpindi and surrounding districts worked late into the night preparing the report, which will be submitted to the IG's office once finalised.

It should be noted that in the Rawat police station area of Rawalpindi, the body of a four-year-old child, who had been missing for nearly two months after being abducted, was found in a water pit.

The police have yet to trace the culprits in this case.

Similarly, in the New Town police station's jurisdiction, over 400 suspects in categories A and B remain unarrested. Rawalpindi police officials, through SP Rawal Division Muhammad Haseeb, assigned a target to the New Town SHO in January for the arrest of these suspects.

However, out of the 400, only four arrests were made. The Express Tribune tried to contact Rawal SP and SHO for comment, but they were unavailable.
