New Zealand has been dealt a significant blow ahead of their first match against Pakistan in the tri-nation series, with key fast bowler Lockie Ferguson suffering a hamstring injury.
Ferguson, who was representing Desert Vipers in the UAE's ILT20 league, was injured during the competition, casting a shadow over his participation in both the Champions Trophy and the tri-nation series.
The injury occurred during the Qualifier 1 match, where Ferguson was unable to complete his quota of four overs and limped off the field.
The medical report on the fast bowler is still awaited, and the decision on his inclusion in New Zealand’s Champions Trophy squad will depend on his recovery.
New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, said the decision regarding Ferguson’s involvement would be made once the medical reports are available.
This injury could prove to be a massive setback for the Kiwi team, especially with Tim Southee's recent retirement. It was expected that Ferguson, along with Matt Henry, would form a formidable pace attack for New Zealand.
In the event that doctors recommend rest for Ferguson, New Zealand will need to announce a replacement. If any squad changes are required after 12th February, they will need approval from the ICC’s technical committee.
Schedule of tri-series matches (day/night matches will start at 2pm, day match will begin at 0930):
8 February – Pakistan v New Zealand (d/n)
10 February – New Zealand v South Africa (d)
12 February – Pakistan v South Africa (d/n)
14 February – Final (d/n)
