David Lynch’s cause of death has been confirmed as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with cardiac arrest listed as the immediate cause.

According to TMZ, the L.A. County Dept. of Public Health released his death certificate on Friday, which also noted dehydration as a contributing factor.

Lynch, known for directing iconic films like 'Blue Velvet', 'Mulholland Drive', and the TV series 'Twin Peaks', has openly discussed his struggles with emphysema, a result of years of smoking. Last year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with the condition and would no longer be able to direct, as he struggled to walk without oxygen. Smoking has been a significant part of his life since he began at age 8.

The director passed away on Wednesday, January 15, at his daughter’s home, where he had been staying during the Los Angeles wildfires. Lynch, 78, was cremated, and his remains were buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on January 22.
