Elon Musk has publicly criticized Reddit after some of its moderators implemented a ban on links to X (formerly Twitter), citing his alleged Nazi salute during President Trump’s inauguration.
This move follows similar actions taken against Wikipedia, which Musk attacked for its "equity" and "inclusion" budget. The Reddit ban specifically targets over 100 communities, including some of its largest subreddits like r/NBA and r/TwoXChromosomes, both with millions of members.
Musk, known for his advocacy of free speech, responded sharply after an X user shared their own experience of being banned from Reddit’s "comics" subreddit for denying the Nazi salute claims. The user, Cedric Hohnstadt, described how a moderator accused him of being "pro-Nazi" after he disagreed with the salute allegations, leading to a permanent ban. Musk called the situation “insane,” and voiced his displeasure over Reddit’s supposed stance on free speech.
The link ban on X is seen as a significant challenge for Musk’s company, which relies on Reddit to drive traffic and foster discussions around trending topics. While Reddit itself has emphasized that there is no sitewide ban on X links, many subreddits have enforced their own restrictions. This could have a lasting impact on the relationship between Reddit and Musk’s platform, affecting content sharing and user engagement.
As tensions between Musk and Reddit grow, it remains unclear how the ban will affect traffic to X. The ongoing situation may signal a larger conflict between tech companies and platforms enforcing stricter content regulations.
