Kennedy family member Jack Schlossberg criticized President Trump for allegedly using the late President John F. Kennedy as a “political prop” after Trump ordered the declassification of files related to his grandfather’s assassination on Thursday.
The 32-year-old grandson of JFK dismissed Trump’s announcement regarding the release of long-secret government documents tied to the murders of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Schlossberg shared his thoughts on social media.
“JFK conspiracy theories — The truth is alot [sic] sadder than the myth – a tragedy that didn’t need to happen,” Schlossberg tweeted. “Not part of an inevitable grand scheme.”
“Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back,” added Schlossberg, who has gained attention partly due to his family connections. “There’s nothing heroic about it.”
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 in Dallas, allegedly by Lee Harvey Oswald, who himself was killed two days later by nightclub owner Jack Ruby.
Speculation continues about whether Oswald acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy.
Officials have been given 15 days to present Trump with a plan for releasing the JFK files and 45 days for the RFK and MLK documents.
Schlossberg, the son of former U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, gained recognition last year as a political correspondent for Vogue and a speaker at the Democratic National Convention.
He is also known for posting quirky tweets and for criticizing his uncle, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump nominated to lead the country’s top health agency.
