Jolie portrayed opera legend Maria Callas in the Pablo Larraín-directed film, earning critical acclaim for her performance. However, despite her efforts, including an extensive press campaign, she was omitted from the final list of nominees.

Jolie, 49, who won an Oscar 25 years ago, went to great lengths to prepare for the role, including learning opera singing. She also made rare public appearances, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the Gotham Awards, to promote the Netflix-backed project.

An insider told Page Six that Jolie’s exclusion from the Academy Awards could be "devastating," particularly after also being overlooked by the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Though she earned a Golden Globe nomination, the Best Actress prize ultimately went to Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres for I'm Still Here.

Speculation has emerged that Jolie’s recent divorce from Brad Pitt may have influenced voting dynamics, with some alleging Hollywood’s preference for Pitt played a role. While Jolie remains highly regarded by international press, a source claimed, “Hollywood is Team Brad.”

Others argue the Oscars' focus on new talent was a key factor. This year’s Best Actress nominees include first-timers Demi Moore (The Substance), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here).

Maria marked Jolie’s return to acting after a hiatus spent directing and raising her six children. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2, with winners announced during the live broadcast.
