ISLAMABAD:

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) was instructed on Monday to widen the scope of its faceless customs assessment system and collaborate with the information technology (IT) ministry for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the process.

Shehbaz chaired separate meeting to review the matters related to the FBR and the housing ministry. Chairing the meeting related to FBR, Shehbaz said that after functioning in Karachi, the faceless customs assessment system should be broadened and implemented in other cities as soon as possible.

He noted significant progress in the digitisation and reforms within the FBR in previous months. "For the first time in history, a system, faceless digitisation system, has been introduced in the customs process, which marks a significant milestone in the digitisation of the FBR," he said.

Shehbaz directed the IT ministry and the FBR to work together to further improve the faceless customs assessment system. He expressed the desire that the system should be shifted to artificial intelligence by minimising human intervention.

The meeting was informed that the faceless customs system at all Karachi port terminals would be made fully operational by the end of February 2025, while efforts were afoot to ensure the operation expanded nationwide.

Low-cost housing projects

Separately, the prime minister chaired a review meeting on the ongoing projects in the housing ministry. The ministry apprised the prime minister of the progress on the ongoing reforms and policy measures in its various departments.

Shehbaz directed prompt completion of low-cost housing projects and a third-party validation of the construction. He also underscored the importance of seeking the services of the reputable construction companies for all the residential projects.

The meeting was briefed on the digitisation and reforms of the FGEHA, online payments and digital systems for complaint resolution
