Call to integrate green tech into road construction
The challenges posed by climate change were highlighted during the inauguration of "Pakistan's first green road" at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) in Rawalpindi.
The event, held at the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FJWU Vice-Chancellor Bushra Mirza and RCCI President Usman Shaukat to establish the "green road" on the university's 137-kanal premises.
The event also saw the participation of the ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Rwanda.
During the briefing, it was revealed that Pakistan ranks among the countries most affected by climate change.
"Recent floods and natural disasters have wreaked havoc on the economy, agriculture, and infrastructure. With 22 per cent of the population dependent on agriculture, over 2 million acres of crops have been damaged, exacerbating food shortages and economic strain."
The nation has suffered losses exceeding $3 billion, with more than 15 million people affected and millions of homes destroyed, the stakeholders were told.
RCCI President Usman Shaukat emphasised the importance of green energy and sustainable development to mitigate the effects of climate change.
