Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, expressed regret on Wednesday over allegations from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders regarding his involvement in government-opposition negotiations.
In a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat, Sadiq clarified that his role in the talks is purely that of a facilitator. He emphasised that meeting with PTI's founding chairman, Imran Khan, is not part of his mandate or responsibility.
“I am only a facilitator in the dialogue between the government and opposition, and I have no obligation to meet with the party chairman,” Sadiq said.
He also expressed disappointment at claims that attempts to reach his office had been met unfavourably. “My doors have always been open to everyone, and I have never refused a meeting with any member of the National Assembly,” he affirmed.
Addressing further concerns, he stated that if PTI leaders feel he should step back from the negotiation process to maintain the neutrality of his office, he is open to considering such a proposal.
Sadiq stated that his absence from the country does not impede his ability to facilitate meetings. “I am always ready to arrange meetings upon request from either the government or the opposition,” he added.
