A total of 323 feature films have been deemed eligible for the 2024 Academy Awards, with 207 meeting the requirements for best picture consideration, according to an announcement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday.
This announcement follows the Golden Globe Awards, held on Sunday night, which unofficially mark the start of Hollywood’s awards season. The films *Emilia Pérez* and *The Brutalist* won the top prizes for best motion picture in musical/comedy and drama categories, respectively.
Both winning films are among those eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards.
To qualify for general categories at the 97th Academy Awards, feature films must have had a commercial theatrical release in one of six U.S. metropolitan areas—Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Atlanta—between January 1 and December 31, 2024. They must also have run for a minimum of seven consecutive days in the same venue and exceed 40 minutes in length.
For best picture eligibility, films must fulfill general category requirements, have an Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards form submitted by producers, and meet an expanded theatrical release criterion. This includes a minimum seven-day run in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets within 45 days of their initial release in 2024.
Academy members will cast their votes for nominations between Wednesday and Sunday, with the official nominations being revealed on January 17.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
