A man father fatally attacked his polio-stricken children before attempting to take his own life in Lodhran.
The tragic event occurred in the Loni settlement near Adda Shahnal on Multan Road, leaving two dead and one critically injured.
Police said Ismail, a resident of Loni, was home with his 25-year-old son Khalid and 23-year-old daughter Musarrat, both unable to walk due to polio, while the rest of the family attended a condolence gathering for a deceased relative.
Ismail used a sharp knife to slit the throats of his children. Musarrat died on the spot, while Khalid was severely injured. After attacking his children, Ismail turned the knife on himself, inflicting critical injuries.
Both Ismail and Khalid were rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Lodhran, where medical staff provided emergency treatment.
According to MS Dr Aurangzeb Jahan, the two were placed on ventilators due to the severity of their injuries before being transferred to Victoria Hospital in Bahawalpur for specialized care. Tragically, Ismail succumbed to his injuries at Victoria Hospital, bringing the death toll to two.
Khalid remains in critical condition, with doctors continuing their efforts to save his life.
Family members revealed that Ismail had been battling mental illness and was under treatment by a local doctor.
His condition was likely exacerbated by the death of a nephew earlier that day, which had left the family deeply distressed.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Lubna Nazir has directed hospital authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for Khalid, the surviving son.
Musarrat's funeral prayers were held at the family's ancestral home, where relatives and neighbors gathered to mourn the tragedy. She was laid to rest later that day.
Saddar Police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code based on a complaint filed by Muhammad Sabir, a relative of the victims.
Sabir reported that the family had been devastated by recent events, and Ismail's fragile mental state led him to commit the heinous act.
