PESHAWAR:

The price of chicken has skyrocketed, with a shocking increase of Rs45 per kilogramme in a single day.

This surge has also led to a rise in the prices of chicken dishes. The sudden and continuous increase in chicken prices has been observed, with the rate rising daily.

On Friday, the price of chicken rose by Rs45 per kilogramme in one day, reaching Rs485 per kilogramme. Over the past week, the price of chicken has increased by Rs185 per kilogramme.

This continuous price hike has also led to an increase in the sale of dead chickens in the city. Due to the rising chicken prices, the cost of chicken karahi in Namak Mandi has reached Rs. 2,000 per kilogramme. Meanwhile, mutton is being sold in Namak Mandi for Rs2,500 to Rs3,000 per kilogramme, but the administration has turned a blind eye to the situation.

Local residents of Peshawar have strongly criticised the price hike and demanded of the provincial government to take notice of the situation and curb it.

They said that the provincial and federal governments had no checks and balances in place to keep inflation and prices under control.

"Before Musharraf's local government system, there was a proper mechanism for price control as well as enforcement in the country. The dictator changed it and till this day, the general public has been bearing the brunt," said local resident Tajamul Khan, while talking to The Express Tribune.

He said that last month, the chicken prices touched down Rs305 per kilo mark as there were rumours on the internet that bird flu had hit the poultry sector and broiler birds were dying in large numbers.
