Local body representatives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have announced a sit-in on January 1, protesting the provincial government's failure to address their demands.
The Local Councils Association (LCA) held a meeting in Battagram to discuss preparations for the demonstration, which aims to push for a strong local government system, devolution of powers, and release of development funds. The meeting was chaired by Mardan Mayor Himayatullah Mayar.
The consultation session, attended by village and neighbourhood council chairpersons and members, included speeches by Anwar Baig, Muhammad Zahid, Shaukat Hayat, Nisar, and others. Coordinator LCA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Intizar Khaleel, was also present.
The speakers criticised the provincial government's lack of interest in local governance, stating that the system is paralysed due to the absence of funds.
They noted that the Battagram tehsil and its village councils, along with the wider Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, are suffering as a result.
“The January 1 sit-in in Peshawar will see full participation from Battagram,” vowed Khaleel, adding that they are hopeful this movement will garner significant support for their cause.
