LAHORE:

PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique revealed that he chose to steer clear of joining his party's government, saying that he believed the country was heading off course.

Speaking at an event commemorating the 52nd death anniversary of his father, Khawaja Muhammad Rafiq, the PML-N leader said while he was still a party member, he couldn't join its hands in the government.

"How long will we continue lamenting in drawing rooms? We need to speak up. Who will do it? This is precisely why I am not part of the government. My colleagues know this well. I am fully within my party, but I cannot remain silent where there are issues. I must speak out."

He further warned that Pakistan cannot progress through "remote-controlled democracy".

He lamented the growing issues in governance, particularly in Azad Kashmir, where "groups are formed, and the government surrenders". He questioned why a person disconnected from Kashmiri politics was placed in a critical position, despite warnings.

"The hearts of Kashmiris beat with Pakistan, so why appoint someone there who has no connection to Kashmir's politics? We had advised against it, but who listens to advice?"

Commenting on the speculations that the US might come to rescue incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan, Saad Rafique said that the new American administration has no interest in Imran. "Their focus aligns with the usual imperialist goals: Pakistan's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes."

"We don't realise our strength, but our enemies do. When the noose tightens around you, how can you remain silent? We must find a way forward."

He also revealed that he had discussed some issues with "some senior figures", though he chose not to name them, adding that negotiations should succeed.
