Three drug-related deaths reported in Kahna

Residents allege peddlers operate with impunity

LAHORE:

The body of a 25-year-old man named Zeeshan was found near the railway mosque green belt. Police said over the past week, three similar cases have been reported, with Kahna police attributing the deaths to drug overdoses.

Drug-related deaths have become alarmingly frequent in Kahna, with dozens of young lives already lost.

The outskirts of Lahore, particularly the Kahna area, have become a hub for drug trade, with rampant sales of narcotics such as cannabis and crystal meth ("ice") putting the youth at grave risk. Over the past week, three bodies of young individuals have been discovered in the area, highlighting the deadly consequences of substance abuse.

Several localities, including Panju, Dhoop Sari, Tor Warraich, Gajjumatta, Jhedu, Sawa Aasal, Old Kahna, and Central Park, have been identified as hotspots for drug peddling.

Residents allege that drug dealers are operating with impunity, reportedly under the protection of local police.

Sources claim that law enforcement officials are complicit, detaining drug peddlers only to release them after negotiating hefty bribes.

In some instances, minor charges are filed against the culprits, while they are allowed to resume their illegal activities shortly after.

Civic, social, welfare, and journalistic organisations in Kahna have collectively demanded immediate action from higher authorities, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
