Sylvester Stallone’s plans to construct an underwater barrier near his $35 million Palm Beach home have drawn criticism from neighbors in the upscale waterfront community. The proposed barrier, which Stallone claims is necessary to keep out debris and seaweed, is described in Army Corps documents as primarily designed to prevent boaters from approaching the property.
Neighbors expressed frustration at the lack of communication regarding the project, with public notice of the proposal arriving too late for many to voice concerns. One neighbor, Bradford Gary, criticized the plan, stating, “You can’t just kind of stake your claim and think you own the water.”
The barrier’s application, initially submitted in January 2023, also requested a lease of state land for its construction. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection allowed public comments until December 25, but some residents reported receiving notices only after the window for objections had closed.
Environmental questions have also been raised, including the potential impact on seagrasses and risks to manatees becoming entangled in the structure. The Army Corps of Engineers is currently evaluating the proposal to determine its suitability and compliance with regulations.
Stallone, 78, purchased the 1.5-acre property in 2021. The estate includes over 13,000 square feet of living space, seven bedrooms, and 12 bathrooms. Despite its luxury, the actor has faced mounting criticism over his decision to limit public access to the Intracoastal Waterway.
Stallone has not publicly addressed the backlash, though he previously stated his move to Florida was motivated by a desire for creative renewal and a change of scenery.
