JI chief demands public relief from cancelled IPP contracts

Hafiz Naeem warned that failure to provide relief would result in renewed protests and a vigorous movement

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called on the government to pass on the benefits of cancelled Independent Power Producers (IPP) contracts to the public, warning that failure to provide real relief would result in renewed protests and a vigorous movement.

In a statement, Hafiz Naeem stressed that protesting is a fundamental right for all political parties, and suppressing public opinion would never lead Pakistan in the right direction. He criticised the ongoing politics of "recovery under the guise of principled politics" and the troubling trend of preventing electoral winners from taking office, describing it as an insult to democracy and public will.

Rehman reiterated JI's commitment to ensuring the cancellation of what he termed as "tyrannical and public-opposing IPP agreements," asserting that the government would not be allowed to evade responsibility. "Jamaat-e-Islami is closely following up on the agreements with the government," he said.

He added that JI's credibility had grown due to its consistent advocacy for justice, democracy, and the supremacy of the constitution. "Today, Jamaat-e-Islami is the effective and strong voice of the people," Rehman concluded.
