Selena Quintanilla’s legacy will once again take center stage with a new documentary set to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
Directed by Mexican-American filmmaker Isabel Castro, Selena y Los Dinos will be featured in the U.S. Documentary Competition. The film, set to debut in January 2025, aims to offer an in-depth look at the life and impact of the Tejano music icon, who was tragically murdered in 1995.
The documentary promises to deliver fresh insights into Selena's life, showcasing “never-before-seen footage” from the Quintanilla family’s personal archive. It also includes interviews with those close to the singer, offering a new perspective on her journey. This marks an exciting moment for fans of Selena, as many past projects have recycled old footage. The 1997 Selena biopic, starring Jennifer Lopez, and Netflix’s 2020 Selena: The Series, starring Christian Serratos, have already explored the singer’s story, but Selena y Los Dinos promises to shed light on her groundbreaking achievements as a Mexican-American woman in the music industry.
While recent Selena-related documentaries have faced criticism, such as the controversial Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them on Oxygen, this new project seeks to refocus on Selena's inspiring story of breaking barriers in música mexicana and empowering women in the genre.
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 23 to February 2, with tickets available for purchase starting January 16, 2025. Fans can look forward to experiencing Selena's legacy in a powerful new light.
