KARACHI:

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar has expressed grave concerns over 10 deaths in traffic accidents over a course of just two days and a total of over 700 fatalities during the outgoing year.

The JI leader here on Wednesday held the government in general and the traffic police in particular responsible for the terrible statistics in connection with deaths and injuries during traffic accidents in Karachi.

Monem Zafar also lambasted the traffic police high-ups for their dismal performance and their denial to the media statistics.

The additional inspector general negates 10 deaths in just two days but accepts the spike in traffic accidents during the past few weeks, he said, asking the high-ups to explain their strategy and measures to mitigate the loss of lives and possessions.

He said that the traffic police in Karachi have totally failed in controlling heavy traffic from entering into the city and its crowded areas during the day time.

He added that the heavy traffic in the city, besides traffic violations and over speeding, contributes heavily in traffic incidents.

Only pressers, mere announcements and rise in penalty amount would not work in this regard, the police and traffic police high-ups will have to explain how much the bribery culture has fallen within the police personals.

He also demanded the Pakistan People Party government in Sindh and the Karachi Municipal Corporation to play their due role in uplifting the infrastructure in Karachi, so as the deadly traffic incidents could be mitigated.
