LAHORE:

The Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) has launched an initiative aimed at equipping youth with the skills required to secure international employment, especially in the Gulf region.

According to a statement, the CM's Skilled Punjab Programme for International Placement seeks to strengthen both the future of young Pakistanis and the national economy by targeting global opportunities. In 2021, remittances constituted 21 per cent of Pakistan's GDP, underscoring their crucial role in economic stability, according to the Asian Development Bank.

The PSDF has identified the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, as key markets for deploying skilled labour from Punjab. To achieve this, the programme will provide training tailored to meet the specific demands of international job markets.

The initial phase aims to train and place 10,000 people in the GCC region, addressing the high demand for skilled workers in sectors such as healthcare, construction, hospitality and retail. Over its two-year span, the initiative will create opportunities for employment abroad.

CM's Skills Development Task Force Chairperson Adnan Afzal Chattha said during a meeting, "We have identified trades where Punjab's youth will receive training."
