The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) apprehended former senator Waqar Ahmad Khan in connection with an alleged Rs6 billion fraud case involving a local housing society.
The arrest took place on December 11 within the premises of the Lahore High Court (LHC), following days of legal manoeuvres and dramatic standoffs.
The case revolves around complaints from affected individuals who accused the housing society of misappropriating funds collected for plots and houses that were never delivered.
NAB initiated an investigation and sought Khan's custody to advance the inquiry.
On December 10, NAB officials, supported by Punjab Police, attempted to arrest Khan at the LHC.
However, the presence of his lawyers and their argument that arrests cannot be made on court premises thwarted the attempt.
Despite waiting for hours, officials were unable to detain the accused.
The situation shifted the next day when a division bench of the LHC, led by Justice Farooq Haider, rejected a protective bail plea filed by Khan's counsel, Asad Manzoor Butt.
The court cited missing documents as one of the objections raised by the registrar's office and dismissed the plea despite assurances from the defence that the paperwork would be rectified.
