Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, 56, has opened up about a near-fatal medical emergency he experienced in April 2023 while filming Back in Action with Cameron Diaz. Speaking on his Netflix comedy special What Had Happened Was ..., Foxx shared an emotional account of the brain bleed and stroke that left his family fearing for his life.
What began as a severe headache quickly escalated into a critical situation. Foxx’s sister, Deidra Dixon, sensed something was gravely wrong after an initial doctor’s visit in Atlanta failed to identify the seriousness of his condition. Acting on instinct, Dixon rushed Foxx to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain bleed that required immediate surgery to save his life. Foxx credited the medical team as “angels” who “put me back together again.”
During the surgery, Dixon knelt outside the operating room, praying as doctors fought to save her brother. Foxx described the surreal experience of being unconscious, sharing how he envisioned a tunnel but injected humor by joking about seeing Sean “Puffy” Combs at the end of it.
Foxx awoke in May, wheelchair-bound and unaware of what had happened. Doctors warned that while a full recovery was possible, the year ahead would likely be his most challenging. Despite the daunting prognosis, Foxx embraced his sense of humor and faith as guiding forces. “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive,” he recalled thinking, crediting physiotherapists, a psychiatrist, and his renewed Christian faith for helping him persevere.
Foxx’s Netflix special captures his resilience and gratitude, highlighting his journey from near-death to recovery. With Back in Action set for release on January 17, Foxx’s story is a testament to the power of faith, humor, and determination in overcoming life’s greatest challenges.
