Luigi Mangione, who has been arrested and is currently being questioned in connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, comes from a well-known Baltimore family and has attended an Ivy League institution. Police have named Mangione a "strong person of interest" in the fatal shooting of Thompson outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan on December 4.

During a press conference on December 9, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Mangione was detained on gun charges. He had been at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, when a staff member grew suspicious of him and called the authorities. When they arrived, Mangione was found with clothing and a "ghost gun" that resembled the one used by the shooter in Thompson's death.

According to a CNN report from Monday, Mangione is the grandson of Nicholas Mangione, a well-known real estate developer in Baltimore. The Mangione family also owns Lorien Health Systems, a nursing home chain in Maryland, where Luigi worked at a time in 2014, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Luigi Mangione graduated as valedictorian from Gilman School, an exclusive all-boys institution in Baltimore, in 2016. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science with a minor in math in 2020, as reported by CNN.

Mangione is credited with founding the Game Research and Development club at the University of Pennsylvania, known as UPGRADE, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian. The club reportedly grew to 50 members, although an article from Penn Today featuring Mangione has been removed following the police’s press conference on Monday.

His LinkedIn profile went viral after showcasing his career achievements, such as his role as a data engineer at TrueCar, a company based in California. Additionally, he co-founded AppRoar Studios, a start-up focused on software development and engineering.

The Daily Pennsylvanian also reported that Mangione was inducted into the Eta Kappa Nu honor society for excellence in electrical and computer engineering prior to his college graduation.

Henry P.A. Smyth, the Head of School at Gilman School, where Mangione graduated, is said to have sent an email to parents and the school community after the news of the murder broke. According to CNN, Smyth wrote: "This is deeply distressing news on top of an already awful situation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected." Smyth also confirmed Mangione graduated from the school in 2016, but noted that the institution has no further details about the suspect other than what has been reported in the media.
