Three time world champion and celebrated Mexican boxing legend, Israel Vazquez, has passed away at the age of 46, as confirmed by World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman on Tuesday. He had been battling sarcoma cancer, a struggle he publicly revealed on November 10.

"Israel is finally resting in peace. May God provide his family with strength. We extend all the support to his wife Laura, his kids, family, and friends during this difficult time. Thanks, champion, for leaving a special footprint. You will always be 'El Magnifico'," Sulaiman shared on X.

Vazquez began his professional boxing career in 1995 and quickly gained recognition for his thrilling rivalry with fellow Mexican boxer Rafael Marquez. The two squared off four times between 2007 and 2010, with each fighter winning two bouts.

Their 2007 and 2008 encounters were particularly memorable, both receiving the prestigious Fight of the Year honours.

Following his 2008 victory, Vazquez suffered a detached retina, which led to the loss of his right eye after his retirement. His final fight took place in May 2010, where he was defeated by Marquez via knockout.

Vazquez's career achievements include winning the vacant IBF super bantamweight title in 2004 with a victory over Jose Luis Valbuena, defending it twice, and later capturing the WBC title from Oscar Larios in 2005 with a third-round stoppage.

He retained the WBC title until his first encounter with Marquez, where he withdrew in round seven due to breathing difficulties caused by a broken nose. Five months later, he reclaimed the title by knocking out Marquez in the sixth round, despite sustaining cuts above both eyes.

In early 2008, Vazquez won their third bout by split decision after being knocked down during the fight. However, subsequent eye injuries kept him away from the ring for an extended period, and he eventually forfeited his WBC title.

After undergoing three surgeries, Vazquez made a comeback for a fourth fight against Marquez, but suffered a third-round knockout loss. His career came to an end with a record of 44 victories (32 by knockout) and 5 defeats.

The WBC announced in November that Vazquez was diagnosed with cancer, and a GoFundMe page was set up to appeal for donations for his treatment.
