In exchange of gunfire between Lahore's Organised Crime Unit (OCU) Model Town and suspected criminals, an alleged contract killer and shooter Azam Khan was killed on Wednesday.
Police said known for his violent crimes, Khan was considered a symbol of terror.
Inspector Imran Yousaf said the incident unfolded when his team was transporting Azam Khan under physical remand to the jurisdiction of Kahna Police Station in connection with an investigation aimed at apprehending his accomplices and recovering the murder weapon.
Unidentified gunmen, believed to be Khan's associates, launched a relentless attack on the police convoy, attempting to free him.
In the ensuing crossfire, Khan sustained critical injuries from bullets fired by his own associates. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his wounds en route. Azam Khan had a long and violent criminal history, including cases of murder, attempted murder, and illegal weapon possession.
In 2023, he allegedly executed a brutal double murder in Lahore's Liaqatabad area, killing Talha Irfan and Umar Butt with close-range shots to the head.
Fourteen years earlier, Khan had also been implicated in the fatal shooting of Fayyaz Hussain.
