A Minnesota father who criticized President-elect Donald Trump online is reported to have fatally shot his wife, ex-partner, and two sons before taking his own life, as confirmed by authorities.
The shooter, identified as 46-year-old Anthony Nephew, had a "history of mental health issues," according to Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa on Friday, a day after five people were discovered dead across two homes in the area.
Authorities reported that Anthony Nephew’s ex-partner, 47-year-old Erin Abramson, and their 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew, were found with fatal gunshot injuries in their home on Thursday afternoon.
After identifying Nephew as the suspect, police discovered his wife, 45-year-old Kathryn Nephew, and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, also dead from gunshot wounds in their nearby residence.
Nephew himself was found deceased at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Prior to the incident, Anthony Nephew had been posting left-leaning and anti-Trump content on his Facebook page.
In a July post, he expressed his fears about his mental health and religious extremism, stating how these concerns affected his family life.
He also shared that he feared religious zealots might harm him or his family, saying he imagined scenarios like being persecuted as a heretic.
In a separate post, he criticized Republicans, claiming they were making it more difficult for women to escape abusive situations.
He referenced The Handmaid’s Tale, comparing the political climate to the novel's dystopian society where women are stripped of their rights and forced into servitude.
Among other posts, Nephew shared an image featuring former President Barack Obama, Trump, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, with the word “hate” under Trump’s face and positive words under the Democratic leaders.
As an Independent voter, Nephew expressed disappointment in both political parties in a July post, saying he wished for better candidates, criticizing the current choices as a forced decision between authoritarianism and its opposition.
