Peanut the squirrel, a popular pet known for his social media presence, was euthanized by New York state wildlife authorities after being seized from his home to test for rabies. Peanut's owner, Mark Longo, had turned the squirrel into an online star over the past seven years, capturing thousands of fans with heartwarming posts about their life together on social media.

On October 30, New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), alongside Chemung County's health officials, removed Peanut and Longo’s pet raccoon, Fred, from the home. DEC authorities explained that wild animals in domestic settings pose health risks, especially after one person involved with the investigation was reportedly bitten by Peanut. Both animals were tested for rabies in compliance with New York’s laws on wild animal ownership.

State officials emphasized that wild animals like Peanut and Fred are considered property under New York law and can only be legally kept by licensed wildlife rehabilitators. Longo shared that he had begun the licensing process and was prepared to comply but claimed the DEC did not provide the necessary guidance. The removal of Peanut, along with the force used, sparked significant public outcry, with tens of thousands signing a petition calling for Peanut's return. Longo now plans to pursue legal action, alleging excessive force during the seizure.
