Non-citizen accused of killing Green Bay officer Thomas Roberts placed on ICE hold

Obilio Roblero faces ICE hold following alleged hit-and-run that killed retired Green Bay officer Thomas Roberts.

Obilio Thomas Sargento Roblero, accused of causing the death of retired Green Bay Police Officer Thomas Roberts, is reportedly under an ICE immigration hold as authorities prepare his extradition to Wisconsin.

According to local media reports, the fatal incident occurred on October 25, 2024, in Oconto County, Wisconsin, when Roblero, allegedly driving a silver SUV, struck Roberts’ ATV before fleeing the scene on foot. The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with other agencies, tracked Roblero to Arkansas, where he was taken into custody. According to the criminal complaint, Roblero, who had worked at a dairy farm in Wisconsin, was reportedly attempting to reach Mexico.

Roberts, who served in the Green Bay Police Department from 2000 to 2018, was remembered fondly by the department as a “kind and caring spirit loved by everyone.” Sheriff Todd Skarban expressed his sorrow over Roberts’ death, describing him as “a wonderful salt of the earth guy.” Roberts had recently participated in a 9/11 Memorial bike ride and was well-regarded by the community.

Upon investigating the scene in Oconto County’s Town of Gillett, deputies found Roberts lying unresponsive, blood visible from his mouth and ears. His ATV had been struck and lay on its side, while Roblero’s SUV displayed visible front-end damage. According to witness statements, Roberts had been assisting others by towing a UTV when the collision occurred. Witnesses also observed Roblero exit the SUV and flee the scene on foot. Police located a beer can and cell phone inside the abandoned vehicle.

The complaint details that a K9 unit initially attempted to track Roblero’s location near a cornfield but was unsuccessful. Subsequent interviews with Roblero’s wife, Glademy Morales, revealed she had spoken with him shortly after the incident. Roblero allegedly admitted that he had been involved in the accident, describing it as unintentional. Morales disclosed that Roblero told her he swerved to avoid a deer before hitting Roberts’ ATV, then panicked and fled.

Additional information came to light when a local woman reported seeing Roblero at a residence for farm workers. According to her, Roblero was “nervous and scared,” and he confided in her about the accident. His family reportedly tried to arrange transportation for him to leave the area, with contacts both in Wisconsin and Mexico.
