The All Pakistan Dumper Association staged a protest at Ratta Chowk in Taxila, raising concerns against heavy fines on Friday. In an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune, the union president stated, "We will not back down from our demands. Our protest has been ongoing for five days."
He explained that the Motorway Police and NHA impose heavy fines on transporters for exceeding weight limits by 20 to 30 kilogrammes. "If the fines are not paid, the air is let out of the tires, creating dangerous conditions. Our drivers have been treated very disrespectfully, and many have even been assaulted."
The president further noted that despite bringing the issue to the attention of higher officials, no action has been taken, forcing them to continue their protest. "We will not leave until our demands are met, and we will consult with organisational leaders to expand this protest across Pakistan."
He emphasised that "the dumper industry supports thousands of livelihoods, and the Motorway Police and NHA officials are jeopardising our children's income. This economic slaughter must end."
Travelers reported, "The daily protests have put our households in jeopardy," noting that daily wage workers are particularly affected.
On the other hand, when contacted, the NHA officials refrained from offering any comment on the situation.
