Call for multipurpose shelters to mitigate losses from cyclones

Participants of a multi-sectoral dialogue have underlined the importance of disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and the need to equip future generations to face climate challenges.

Different stakeholders, including representatives of NGOs and government departments, attended the event jointly organised by the Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in connection with International Disaster Risk Reduction Day at the deputy commissioner's office in Thatta.

Javed Hussain, Executive Director of SCF and keynote speaker, highlighted the global climate crisis, particularly its impact on Thatta. He said that rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns are causing severe damage to natural ecosystems.

"Thatta has seen a rise in cyclones, floods, and sea intrusions, which have had far-reaching effects on agriculture, health, and natural vegetation," he said. "These climate challenges are also widening gender inequalities, putting the livelihoods and safety of coastal communities at risk."
