Bilawal advocates for constitutional courts at provincial level

PPP chairman confident draft of constitutional amendment can be developed through mutual understanding among parties

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed the party's desire to establish a constitutional court at the provincial level to facilitate governance alongside the federal structure.

He noted that this proposal is absent from the draft presented by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

In an interview on the Express News programme 'Center Stage,' Bilawal stressed the importance of consensus among political parties regarding constitutional amendments.

"We should remain hopeful that consensus can be reached on constitutional reforms; it is the responsibility of political parties to resolve issues through agreement," he stated.

He expressed confidence that a draft could be developed through mutual understanding among the parties.

He remarked that there is not a significant gap between the drafts of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and the PPP, stating, "Inshallah, we will move forward and build consensus among the political parties."

He further elaborated that the PPP had prepared a draft for constitutional amendments long ago, which was shared with the government and Maulana Fazlur Rehman. "In today’s meeting, we also presented our draft," he added.

The core proposal from the PPP is to have a constitutional court established at the provincial level.

Bilawal reiterated that their position has consistently been in favour of creating a formal court for constitutional matters at the provincial level whereas the PML-N draft only addresses the establishment of a constitutional court at the federal level.
