Recently, actor Armeena Khan took to Instagram to share some frightening news. "We just nearly died. A truck hit our little car. I've lived to tell the tale. We are not hurt, thank God," she reported, confessing that the near-death experience had left her shaking.
Additionally, she shared a picture of her damaged vehicle, which was wrecked from the side. "The truck hit on Amelie's side too," continued the Bin Roye actor, bringing up the near-possibility of her toddler getting seriously injured. "I said a prayer for protection, hence we are alive right now."
Fans were prompt in commenting prayers for the survivor and her family. "I'm so glad that they are safe. It's all thanks to Allah. May He shelter us all under His protection and refuge. Ameen. We need to be grateful for every second, every microsecond of life we get," one user expressed. It is evident that many also responded to her Story, as the 37-year-old actor later addressed fans in an earnest update.
"I want to thank you all for your kind and heart-warming messages. We are all okay, I don't know how, but we are," she wrote, grateful to God for the miracle that saved her family. She admitted to still being under shock and slowly processing the incident, though also reassuring her followers that she and her family are all right. "Thank you so much again, and please keep us in your prayers," she requested.
Road accidents have become a prevalent national issue, as of late. Following the Karsaz incident involving the murder of Imran Arif and his daughter Amna and the legal exemption of the elite from accountability, there has been a country-wide outrage and many issues are being brought to light.
Not long after the Karsaz case, actor Angeline Malik was ambushed by an enraged mob as a result of a minor accident. However, no major injuries were sustained, and the accident happened as a result of an unforeseen malfunction, not Angeline's lack of care.
It was still a harrowing experience for the 49-year-old actor, whose phone was snatched by the gathered crowd, as evidenced by a viral clip. Although she kept reassuring them that she would take full responsibility and had no intention to flee, they allowed her no space to assess her mistake or contact someone for assistance.
She recounted her experience in an interview with Frieha Altaf, recalling how difficult it had been to keep her resolve steady. Angeline stressed that the swarm of people was less concerned with the affected rickshaw driver and more focused on being hostile towards her, which only left her terrified of the civilian punishment that could have followed. Eventually, authorities intervened and de-escalated the situation.
These incidents and the varying levels of justice accorded to them do raise questions about whether legal proceedings and our sentiments are well-divided across such cases. While public outrage in the Angeline incident was reasonably influenced by a former case that was denied justice, it was more counter-productive than helpful for the affected parties.
It is deliberate negligence that can actually prove fatal on the road, which is what happened with Imran and Amna and could easily have happened to Armeena and her family. It is, therefore, important to recalibrate our priorities and do what's in our power to avoid street tragedies.
