Karachi residents may soon face an additional financial burden of around Rs853 million as K-Electric (KE), the city's sole power utility, has requested a 51 paisa per unit increase in power tariffs under the Fuel Charges Adjustment for August 2024.
KE has submitted a formal request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise the power price by 51 paisa per unit. "KE has sought a provisional FCA for August 2024, calculated based on the interim reference tariff from March 2024," said a source in the power division.
A public hearing to consider the proposed adjustment is scheduled for October 3, 2024. NEPRA will assess whether the requested FCA is justified and if KE followed the merit order in dispatching power from its own plants and external sources. NEPRA will also invite written or oral comments from interested or affected parties during the hearing.
Since KE's Multi-Year Tariff is still under determination, the utility has filed this FCA request on a provisional basis, using NEPRA's interim tariff from March 2024.
