KARACHI:

A 50-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) worker, who was shot and critically injured allegedly by muggers near Nipa Bridge in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on the night of September 13, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Wednesday night.

The funeral prayers for the deceased, Abdul Haleem Umiri, were offered on Thursday at Gol pm Ground in Model Colony, following Zuhr prayers.

A large number of mourners, including family members, friends, and JI leaders, attended the funeral. JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar and General Secretary Tawfiquddin Siddiqui were also among the mourners.

Speaking to the media after the funeral, Munim Zafar expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic shooting. "Today, we bid farewell to Haleem Umiri, yet another life lost to senseless violence. Over 90 innocent civilians have lost lives during robberies this year alone," he added.

"It is heartbreaking that lives are taken for mere mobile phones and cash. Thousands of incidents occur daily, yet the provincial government remains absent."

The JI Karachi chief said that the state's primary duty is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. He called for action to eradicate street crime and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

"The chief minister of Sindh bears responsibility for these crimes. We demand the immediate arrest and punishment of Abdul Haleem Umiri's murderers.

The state of our city is dire, with rampant corruption and unchecked racketeering. The government must also provide compensation to families of street crime victims," he added.

Later, Abdul Haleem Umiri was laid to rest in the Model Colony graveyard.
