Whether you’re an early bird or more of a night owl when it comes to working out, your post-workout skincare routine is a must-do. According to Joyce Park, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Refinery, "Exercising can cause sweating, which can lead to clogged pores, acne, or folliculitis breakouts." Additionally, tight workout clothes can cause skin irritation, and the bacteria in gyms may lead to infections or breakouts.

With this in mind, experts agree that you need to cleanse and moisturize your skin after every workout. Below is a step-by-step guide to your post-workout skincare routine, according to dermatologists.

1. Cleanse Your Face

Always start your routine with a good cleanse to remove sweat and oil. “Cleansing the skin is important post-workout as debris, oil, and bacteria are left on the skin and pores are open, which can lead to breakouts,” says Dr. Lombardi, board-certified dermatologist and founder of the Skin Cancer & Cosmetic Surgery Center of NJ. A gentle cleanser is ideal since the skin can be more sensitive due to increased blood flow after exercising.

Dr. Park also suggests trying a double cleanse. “I am a fan of cleansing oils or a cleansing balm [as your first step],” says Dr. Park.

On the go? No problem. Use a facial wipe with micellar water to quickly refresh your skin when washing isn’t an option.

2. Exfoliate Your Face After cleansing, it’s a good idea to exfoliate to prevent clogged pores from sweat and dirt buildup. Dr. Park notes, “Exfoliating is essential after working out as your skin is prone to clogged pores from sweat and dirt clinging to your skin surface.”

Look for exfoliating products that contain alpha hydroxy acid, beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid. Whether it’s a liquid, serum, or mask, choose your favorite format.

3. Exfoliate Your Body

Your face isn’t the only part that needs attention—exfoliating your body is just as important after a sweaty workout. Start with an exfoliating body wash, and for an extra boost, Dr. Park recommends using a mitt during your shower. Look for body washes with ingredients like retinol or salicylic acid for smoother, healthier skin.

4. Rehydrate and Moisturize

After sweating it out, your skin is likely dehydrated. “Replenishing the skin with vitamins and nutrients that help to reduce redness and rehydrate is important,” says Dr. Lombardi. She suggests starting with a hydrating mist featuring ingredients like hyaluronic acid, green tea, rose water, or witch hazel.

Finish off with a lightweight moisturizer to seal in the hydration, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water to hydrate from within.

5. Apply Sunscreen

Even if you’ve been indoors, sunscreen is crucial after a workout—especially if you’ve been using exfoliants. Dr. Park recommends applying “two to three finger lengths of sunscreen” for your face and neck, and reapplying every two hours.

If your workout is outdoors, don’t wait until after—you should apply sunscreen before hitting the gym or pavement to avoid harmful UV exposure.

After a workout, don’t delay your skincare routine. “Hit the shower as soon as possible,” says Dr. Park. “You do not want to lounge around in your sweaty clothes or with sweat and other impurities sticking to your skin. This can increase the likelihood of breakouts.”

While cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and sunscreen are key steps, your post-workout routine may vary depending on your skin type or pre-existing conditions. “Your skincare routine may be different if you have pre-existing skin conditions, but cleansing and hydration are the most important steps across the board after a workout,” adds Dr. Levine.

As always, it’s a good idea to consult with a dermatologist to tailor your skincare routine to your specific needs, especially after a workout.
